DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A

May 27, 2007

Q. What is Java and do I need it?

A. Java is a programming language used extensively on the Internet. You do not need the actual Java programming language unless you are going to write code for programs or web sites.

However, you do need the Java runtime environment (often referred to simply as Java)  and this you already have or you couldn't properly view many web sites. It is usually installed with your browser.

Sun, the originators of Java, describe it this way.

"Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. These applications, written in the Java programming language and accessed from your browse, are called "applets". Corporations also use Java applets for intranet applications and other e-business solutions." To read a little about its history, click HERE.
To keep your Java runtime environment up to date, go to this  website www.java.com, and click on the "Free Java Download" button. If you try to download it and already have the latest update, you will be given the chance to verify the installation.  As of this writing, the current is version 6, update 1.

Q. For some reason MS Word attachments to incoming email have the extension .eml and I have to change the .eml to .doc to read them. Is there a way to make Outlook Express read these incoming .eml attachments?

A. If you are receiving a file with an .eml extension, then it is a email file not a doc file that was created in Word. Double clicking it should open it is your default email program, which in your case seems to be Outlook Express. If double clicking on them doesn't open them in Outlook Express, then the association must not be set correctly. Word can also open these files, sometimes, if the extension is changed to .doc as you have done.

To associate the .eml extension with Outlook Express, copy the file with the .eml extension from the email to any place on our hard drive. The desktop will do for now and it can be deleted later.

Right click on the filename, and choose Open With. Under Recommended Programs, if Outlook Express is there, highlight it, then click the box in front of "Always use this program.......", and click OK.

If Outlook Express is not listed, click Browse, then scroll to Outlook Express folder and click on it to open it, then find MSIMN.exe, and click on it. Then check the box in front of "Always use this program.....", and click OK.

From then on, any time you click on an .elm file it will open in Outlook Express.

As to the origin of attachments that have the .eml extension, this is often done when someone forwards an email if the email program is set to forward email as an attachment. Yahoo, Hotmail, Netzero are ones that come to mind that may do this by default.
