DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A
July 8,
2007
Q.
I am getting ready to buy a flat panel
monitor and need to know if my computer uses
analog or digital.
A.
Most computers still use analog while newer
ones may come with digital or both. If you
were to but a new computer that had hardware
to support Vista Ultimate, it would probably
have both. I recently bought one with Vista
Home Premium and a 20 " wide flat panel, and
it came with both. You can only use one or
the other at a time with a single monitor.
The
easiest way is to look at the connector on
the back of the computer where the monitor
is connected. In the picture below, the
analog connection is on the left and the
digital is on the right.
Q.
I am using Microsoft's OneCare and have had
a problem on a couple of occasions on
different computers with it not being able
to update. Is there a fix for this?
A. One
way that worked in the past was to uninstall
OneCare, and then download and re-install
it. However, Microsoft has finally
acknowledged that there is a problem and has
produced a simple solution.
Click
HERE to
download a fix. This is a zip file that,
when unzipped, contains an .exe file that
should correct the problem. It restores all
the OneCare settings to factory defaults,
and that should get rid of the "won't
update" problem. You will probably have to
reset your default options, like setting the
backup, firewall, etc., to suit after
running this fix, but that is much easier
than uninstalling and re-installing OneCare
.
Q.
I accidentally deleted some folders I had
created in Outlook. How can I recover them
and the files that were in them?
A.
If you are real lucky, they may still be in
the Deleted Items folder in Outlook. If so,
they can be easily restored. Here's how from
the Outlook Help file:
To
restore a file or folder......
-
On the Go menu, click Folder List
-
In the Navigation Pane click Deleted
Items.
-
Select the items you want to retrieve.
-
Right-click the selection.
-
Click Move to Folder on the shortcut
menu.
-
In the list, click the folder you want
to move the items to.
If
you are not so lucky, and they have
already been deleted from the Deleted
Items folder. I'm afraid there is nothing
you can do to retrieve the lost files.
Your only choice is to re-create the
folders. Here's how to do that:
From
the Outlook Help file...
Create a folder
1. On
the File menu, point to New, and then
click Folder.
2. In
the Name box, enter a name for the
folder.
3. In
the Folder contains box, click the type
of folder you want to create.
4. In
the Select where to place the folder
list, click the location for the folder.
