DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A

Q. I accidently deleted the Windows Update item from my start menu. How can I get it back?

A. This is something that I have been asked several times, so I will explain how it is done. Since there are quite a few steps required, it may be easier if this were printed first.

1. Click on My Computer, then the C drive.
2. Go to the Windows then System 32 folder.
3. Cursor down until you find a file named wupdmgr.exe
4. Right click on it and select Send To then Desktop (create shortcut)
5. Go to your desktop, and find the shortcut you just created. It will have the same name as the file, wupdmgr.exe
6. Right click on it and choose Rename and change the name to Windows Update.
7. Right click and hold the mouse button down, and drag it to the Start button, then release it there.
8. Click Start, and you will see it now appear at or near the top of the start menu.

9. Click and hold down the mouse button, and drag it to the little arrow just to the right of the words "All Programs" near the bottom of the menu and hold it there.
10. When the menu opens, drag it to any space above the line near the top and release it there. This is where it was before you accidently deleted it. Click on it here will take you to the Windows update web site.
11. Now, click Start, and right click the entry on the left top of the start menu that you placed there in step 7.
12. Right click on it, and choose "Remove from this list"

13. Go back to your desktop, and remove the shortcut from it and you're all done.

Q. In Vista, in my Contacts in Windows Mail, the toolbar is missing some items. One I need is "New Contact Group" but it is missing. How can I get it back.?

A. This is a fairly common question and something that has happened to me too. To those not familiar with Vista, Windows Mail has replaced Outlook Express, and Contacts has replaced the Windows Address Bok.

Depending on how you have configured Windows Explorer, the normal Contacts menu may have been replaced with another one. Here's how to get it back.

1. Open Windows Mail, and click the Contacts icon in the menu.
2. Click Organize, go down and click on Properties.
3. Click the Customize tab.
4. In the space below "Use this folder type as a template", All Items or Documents or Music will probably be displayed.
5. Click the little down arrow at the far right of this space, and choose Contacts.
6. Click the box in front of "Also apply this template to all sub folders".
7. Click OK, and you're all done.

When you now open your contacts, the correct menu will be there, and you will have the item "New Contact Group" available. This will allow you to create a new contact group or edit an existing one.
