DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A
July 20,
2008
A.
This is an old trick that I have seen kids
play on their parents or their teachers. Of
course, you could have done it
unintentionally, but either way, it is easy
to fix. Note that this will only work on XP,
not Vista.
First,
I'll explain how to make all the filenames
disappear. This will only happen if the
folder is set to display thumbnails. If you
open any folder, and click on Views in the
menu, or the down arrow next to the Views
icon, you will see that there are five ways
to view the items in the folder. They are
Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, and Details.
In folders with pictures, there may be one
additional way, Filmstrip. The display where
there are no filenames can only be done when
view is set to Thumbnails.
To turn
off the filenames, set the view to Details.
Then, while holding down the shift key,
change it to thumbnails. The filenames will
disappear.
Now, to
turn them back on, it is a little different.
First, make sure that the subject folder is
set to view thumbnails. If the folder tree
is not being displayed in the left pane,
click on "Folders" in the menu to display
it. The current problem folder will be
highlighted. Remember its name. Click on any
another folder to open it. Then holding down
the shift key, click on the subject folder,
the one you just remembered. You may have to
scroll up or down to find it. Don't release
the shift key until you have clicked on it.
The subject folder will now open, and all
the filenames will be back.
Q.
When I print out something from the web,
there is always the URL and date printed at
the bottom. Is there a way to prevent this
from printing on every page?
A.
Yes, and it is pretty easy to turn off. When
you have Internet Explorer open and have
selected what you want to print, click on
the little down arrow next to the printer
icon in the right side of the tool bar and
choose Page setup.
In the
middle section of the dialog, there is a
heading "Headers and Footers". The footer
space will probably have something like
&u&b&d in it. This is telling the page to be
printed with the URL on the left and the
date on the right. The symbols in the Header
tell the print out to have the page name on
the left and the page # of Pages total on
the right.
To just
eliminate just the URL from the bottom,
delete the &u. To delete the URL and date,
delete everything. Once you make this
change, it will be permanent. Should you
want to not print this information on the
current printout only, then click on File,
and choose Print Preview. When the document
appears, pressing the ALT+E keypress will
toggle the header and footer on and off.
This does not change the default setting.
