DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A
October 19,
2008
Q.
For some reason, when I insert a CD nothing
happens. It used to ask me what I wanted to
do, but now nothing. How can I get the
prompt back?
A.
Without knowing it, you probably told
Windows to "Take No Action" when the CD is
inserted. In XP you have several choices
while in Vista, you have a whole lot more.
Since you didn't mention what operating
system you are using I'll cover both. XP
first.
Click on
My computer and when it opens locate the CD
drive, and Right click on it. Choose
Properties, then the Auto start tab. A
dialog like this will display.

In the
top space, choose the type media you want to
set. Your choices here may be something like
Music, Pictures, Video, Mix, Music CD, DVD
Movie etc. Music CD has been selected in
this example. Under the Actions, you can
Select an option like Copy Music, Play, Copy
CD, Open to view files, or Take No Action
and possibly others. You will have to scroll
down to see them all. Below this box is the
option to "Prompt me each time...."
I suspect
that the choice to "Take no Action" somehow
got selected and you want the option to
"Prompt me each time....". Just click it and
click OK. You will have to repeat this
procedure for each content type.
In Vista
all the possible content types are displayed
in one dialog. Like many other options and
settings in Vista, this one has been moved
to the Control Panel and enhanced. Opening
the Control Panel and clicking the AutpPlay
icon opens this screen.

As you
can see, there are many more possibilities
to choose and all content types are made
from this one dialog. In the first item,
Audio CD, clicking the scroll down arrow
shows these possible actions.

Among the
possible choices you can still choose to
"Take no Action" or "Ask me every time". If
you are using Vista, then Take no action may
have been set. Just select "Ask me....." and
click OK. If you were to add more content
type devices they would be automatically
shown in this same dialog.
Setting
the action to "Prompt me..." or "Ask me..."
will give you the choice you desire.
There is
one additional feature of the Vista autoplay
that is there for security reasons. When a
CD is inserted, and the default action has
been set to automatically run the CD, you
are still given a dialog asking if you want
to run the autorun file or just view the CD.
This prevents auto-running a rogue program
without your permission. |
