DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A

June 11, 2006

Q. Lately I have become disillusioned with McAfee and Norton's antivirus programs. They have gotten so big and intrusive that they are a real pain in the butt to use. Can you recommend a good, easy to use program that will give my computer adequate protection without taking it over?

A. Not too long ago I would have recommended AOL and its Security Center, but no longer. I have had too many experiences, all of them bad, with AOL's Security Center programs on my own computers and those I work on for others. It is not too difficult to understand why AOL is loosing customers in droves. They lost me and members of my family last month.

Now in my opinion, as for McAfee and Norton's it looks to me like they are trying to do to much and they have become more of a burden to the computer than a help. I have purchased Norton's 2006, and McAfee 2006, but am not using either one. They seem to double the computer's boot up time, and take up a lot of resources. Lately, their protection has come under fire as there have been some serious security issues with them. They are either blocking legit programs, or allowing the very things they are supposed to be protecting you from.

About a year ago I started beta testing a new program from Microsoft called OneCare Live. It has just recently been released for sale to everyone. It is a full featured security suite, that offers all the security and other functions that most people will ever need. It gets along with everything else on the computer, is not intrusive, and does its job well. It costs $50 a year for three computers, and is all that I have been using for over 6 months. I highly recommend it, especially if you have a broadband connection.

Q. I hit something or clicked something and now website look magnified. What did I do, and how do I get it back to normal?

A. With Internet Explorer open, hold down the CTRL key and rotate the mouse wheel. That will change the magnification of the display. Depending on the version of Internet Explorer, this may be a very touchy adjustment.

In the new Version 7 (beta 2) of Internet Explorer, there is an adjustment in the bottom right of the screen that allows this setting to be changed more easily. It also allows it to be changed to a wide range from as low as 10%, and as high as 1000%, although I can see absolutely no reason for viewing anything at those extremes.

Q. When I log in on my website to edit, (add, change, delete) can others log on to the website while I am editing it?  Or is it blocking others from the site until I finish editing and log off?

A. Yes, normal users can still access your website even though you are editing files on it. Your editing files does NOT lock your site out from normal usage. The page you are working on doesn't get uploaded until you save it, and the page it replaces on the server is not removed until the new page has been completely uploaded. Even if a user is viewing a page when you upload its replacement, he will continue to see the old page until he refreshes his browser. He will never be locked out from the page.
