DADDY BOB'S COMPUTER Q & A

December 10, 2006

Q. When I click on Start and a program has recently been installed, there is a popup that tells me that there has been a new program installed. I find this annoying so can this popup be turned off?

A. Yes. Disabling this popup will also prevent the recently installed program from being highlighted in the start menu. Here's how to disable it.

Right click the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and select Properties. Click the Start Menu tab, and the the Customize button. Click the Advanced tab and then uncheck the box in front of Highlight newly installed programs. Click OK, then OK, and the newly installed programs popup will no longer be displayed and the program will not be highlighted in the menu.

Q. Doesn't XP have a pretty good pop up blocker in it? IF it does how do you install it? If it doesn't do you know of a pretty good one that is free?

A. XP itself doesn't have a popup blocker, but there is a pretty good one in Internet Explorer V7. If you are experiencing a popup in a program other than IE7, then you might have a spyware/adware program causing them.

To check if the popup blocker is enabled in IE7, open the control panel, click on Internet Options, then the Privacy tab. Near the bottom of the dialog, there is a box labeled "Turn on popup blocker".

Check it and the popup blocker will be activated. Once it has been checked, you can click on the settings button, and change the filter level, and other settings.

Here you can set the filter level to high, medium or low, add always allowed sites, or remove a site that was previously allowed. You can also choose to have an audio or visual alert when a popup is encountered.

NOTE: By request, I will try to show actual screen shots when possible to better explain my answers. db
